Today, a baby smiled at me. I did not know what answer I needed to give back. His round curious eyes were staring at my face, maybe because of my black plugged ears from which gentle music was flying of. My tired sight stopped by his little hands desperately trying to get a grip on his mom's shoulder. The people sitting around were all smiling at the mother "oh my god, that's a nice baby you have there".
But I was still wondering what reaction the baby really deserved. He was just sitting there, he most definitely did not even know why. The world around him seemed to have decided for him were to go, and why he should be looking at me. As long as mom is not far, everything is fine. Then the baby took a decision. His little beanie received at birth from aunt Janie or uncle Teddy was falling and blocking his amazing view on this weird stranger with black ears, green eyes and facial hair: he suddenly let go of mommy's shoulder and took his beanie away...
This is when I smiled back.
The connection was made. The bus stopped by his house, the family took him away while he was struggling to look at me. Too late baby. Determinism retook the power of decision from you.
